As a parent, every milestone your child reaches brings a mix of excitement and apprehension. Transitioning from a cot to a Montessori floor bed is one of those big steps. It’s not just about a new piece of furniture, it’s a leap toward your beautiful chubby-cheek toddler becoming a little big kid. The change can feel daunting, heart-breaking, exciting and terrifying all at the same time.
At Sleepy Monkey (aka yours truly, a mum of two boys), I understand the worries parents have when making this transition. That’s why I’ve crafted Montessori floor beds to make this step as smooth, safe, and empowering as possible for both you and your little one. Let’s explore the most common concerns and questions that I receive from parents and how to overcome them.
Why the Transition to a Floor Bed Can Feel Daunting
Switching from the perceived safety of a cot to the openness of a floor bed can stir up several questions for parents.
These concerns are valid, but they don’t have to hold you back. With the right preparation and approach, you can navigate this transition confidently.
Addressing Common Concerns
1. What if My Child Falls Out of Bed?
The fear of your little one rolling out of bed is natural, but Montessori beds, like the ones designed by Sleepy Monkey, address this concern directly. Our beds include thoughtfully designed barriers that offer added security while maintaining the openness and accessibility of a Montessori floor bed. With a little bit of coaching your child will know they can get out without climbing the side. In no time you will see your little one shuffling towards the opening and walking themselves out of the bed. Or, like my son does, sitting there calling out for me until I come to get him (even know he knows he can get out on his own)
Solution:
- Sleepy Monkey Montessori beds feature partial barriers that help prevent rolling out, while still allowing easy access for your child to climb in and out independently.
- Position the bed in a safe area and add a soft rug or mat around it as an extra layer of protection.
- Rest assured, children often adapt quickly and develop spatial awareness within a few nights.
- Make sure you baby-proof your room thoroughly. Attach furniture to walls, ensure there aren’t any curtains or blinds that could be a hazard, keep the room minimal, follow all Red Nose Sleep Safe recommendations.
2. What if My Child Roams the Room at Night?
Parents often worry about their child wandering unsupervised, especially during those early nights of adjustment. However, this can be managed with room-proofing.
With my sons I keep the rooms minimal and quite ‘boring.’ So, if they wake up and want to play, there’s nothing exciting in their rooms.
Solution:
- Secure heavy furniture to the walls to prevent tipping.
- Remove small objects and choking hazards.
- Use soft lighting or nightlights to help them navigate safely.
- Install baby gates or keep doors closed to prevent access to other areas of the house.
3. What if My Child Resists Bedtime?
It’s common for children to push back against change. Resistance is often just a sign that they need a little extra time and reassurance. In my experience, and from the comments I receive from parents, kids take to the floor beds quite happily as they feel in charge.
Solution:
- Establish a calming bedtime routine, such as reading a favourite book or singing a song.
- Let your child help set up their new bed by choosing bedding or decorating the area. This sense of ownership can make them more excited about the change.
- Be patient and understanding of any struggles.
4. What if My Child Isn’t Ready?
Not every child will be ready for this transition at the same time. Signs of readiness often include increased mobility, curiosity, or trying to climb out of the cot.
Solution:
- Transition gradually: Start by using the floor bed for daytime naps before moving to full-time use.
- Reassure yourself that readiness is flexible. Your child may need a bit of adjustment and that’s okay.
Practical Tips for a Smooth Transition
1. Prepare the Room
Design a safe and inviting space that encourages independence. Place the bed in a quiet corner, add accessible storage, and ensure all hazards are removed. A Montessori-style layout will empower your child to explore freely and safely.
2. Introduce the Bed Gradually
Let your child become familiar with their new bed during the day. Encourage them to play, climb, and sit on the bed so it feels less intimidating when it’s time to sleep.
3. Stick to a Routine
Consistency is key during this transition. Maintain the same bedtime rituals, whether it’s bath time, a bedtime story, or a favourite lullaby. Familiar routines provide comfort and security.
4. Stay Close at First
During the first few nights, consider staying in the room until your child falls asleep. I’m not a sleep expert so I’m hesitant to share an exact routine. The way that I have done it may not work for every family and that is ok. Do what feels right for you and your family! The beauty of Sleepy Monkey floor beds is that we celebrate your family and do whatever works for you. Being a parent is the hardest job in the world and the last thing you need is some random lady who makes floor beds telling you how to do things.
Why Sleepy Monkey Beds Are Worth It
Sleepy Monkey was born out of love and desperation. I was a first-time mum struggling to sleep with a velcro baby who didn’t want to be away from me. So even though Montessori floor beds have been around for years and years, at Sleepy Monkey we strive to bring this design to every corner in Australia. Made from Australian Hoop Pine (from a plantation in Queensland), without any stains or paints to avoid chemicals near our babies but keeping the option available for parents who would like to stain or paint the bed themselves (there are so many options for safe paints and stains so the world is your oyster!).
The beds are also hand-made here in Australia by our team of woodworkers. Woodworking is a dying art and it has been incredibly difficult to staff and train our workshop so every single bed is done with so much love and care from every single person here.
When I started looking for floor beds I could find lots of options from overseas (paying for insane amounts in shipping – like $500!) or I found lots of single sizes but I needed a double to be able to co-sleep.
So after all that, Sleepy Monkey focuses on quality, love, natural materials and giving parents the peace of mind to choose what works for their families. Take the next step in creating a space where your little one can grow, explore, and thrive.
